Scripture Union Daily Guide 23rd February 2025 Outline
God is not unaware of the adversities His children occasionally face in life. Israel faced water scarcity in the wilderness. What matters most is not the nature of the adversity but our attitude to it. How did Israel react in Numbers 20:3-5? The people blamed Moses for lack of water among other complaints (Numbers 20:5). The devil will always show you what you don’t have but how about counting what you have instead? Imagine if Israel at this point began to count their blessings!
Notice the right attitude to adversity in Numbers 20:6. Moses and Aaron rightly turned to God. But Moses seemed angered by the people as implied in his inconsiderate, loveless, and careless comments in Numbers 20:10-11.
Apparently overwhelmed by anger at this unguarded moment, Moses displayed partial obedience to God, probably influenced by the memory of previous instructions (Exodus 17:6). Remember that this Rock was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4). The miracle still happened, the challenge was overcome, and the people drank water. But God was angry, and Moses and Aaron were punished. This is the burden of leadership.
Carefully compare Numbers 16:8 and Number 20:11. What went wrong? Partial obedience is disobedience (1 Samuel 15:2-3,13-15,19-22).
And So:
Be careful to hear correctly from God. Do not presume. Seek clarification if needed.
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer: Father, give me the grace to fully obey you. Deliver me from murmuring and becoming a stumbling block to my leaders and the brethren.
